Collage with a Theme

Decide on an idea: people, pretty hair, pets, cartoons, spacemen, automobiles and so on.  Then look through old magazines and cut out pictures that illustrate the idea.  Arrange pictures on coloured construction paper-overlapping some, putting others at an angle - and paste down with white glue.  Or arrange and glue photo's on a wooden board, like plywood.  Let dry one hour and coat with clear shellac or varnish for a professional look.

SAND PAINTING WITHOUT SAND

You'll need:  table salt, coloured chalk, two styrofoam or paper cups, one small jar (baby-food jar is a good size).  Pour 1 to 2 inches of salt in each cup.  then rub a piece of coloured chalk against salt;  continue rubbing until friction flakes off some colour and it blends with salt.  The longer you rub, the more vivid the colour.  Pour the coloured salt into jar.  Repeat flaking process with another colour and put into jar.  Do this with each colour you want, layering the salt in jar until it's full.  Then, using a pencil, push down through layers (near outside of jar) so colours run into each other, forming a design.  Top with lid and display.  You can use any clear container for "sand-painting"

Write a story-a comedy or mystery, romance or tragedy-using these words: celebrate, guitar, taste, pop, school, sleepy, television, child, bionics, electrical, alive, rich, coat, tablet, scrap.
You must use these words but of course you can add others-so it makes sense.

POLKA-DOT JELLO (JELLY)

1 cup boiling water
1 package (3oz) jello (jelly) any flavour
1 cup cold water
1 can (1lb) fruit, any kind, drained and cut up
1/2 cup mini marshmallows

Boil water and carefully pour 1 cup into a 2 cup measure.
Pour gelatin powder into mixing bowl.  Add boiling water and stir.  Pour in cold water and continue stirring so that bowl bottom doesn't get gummy.  Add drained fruit and marshmallows.  Pour into a fancy mold or individual dessert dishes and refrigerate until firm, about 3-5 hours.

{Milz talking}  Last week we did the shake and the kids LOVED it.
I'm gonna make this and see what they think.  They should love it as well I hope.  We don't have jelly too much so it'll be interesting to see if they like it.  I know they'll like helping make it, that's for sure.
Good luck.  Let me know how it goes.

For hungry kids who'd like to play cook (some use oven or broiler and blender):
CHOCOLATE SHAKE

1 cup cold milk
2 tablespoons chocolate syrup
1 scoop vanilla ice cream
Put all ingredients into blender.  Cover and press 'whip' and blend 10 seconds or until smooth.  Pour into a tall glass.

{Milz speaking} This sounds fantastic and it's super easy, now I know from first hand experience that having our kids in the kitchen isn't always ideal but WE CAN TOTALLY DO THIS ONE and our kids will think we're the best.
I'm doing it today, you should too.

"French Impressionist" Painting.

One French Impressionist School of painting used dots all over a canvas which, when viewed from a distance, looked like a scene.  Make yours this way:
Place stencils - cutout shapes or leaves - on construction paper.  Then dip an old toothbrush into poster or tempera paint and pull brush back and forth across a piece of screening.  This will spatter the paint in a dot-like pattern all over paper.  Repeat process with other colours if desired.  Remove stencils and hang your picture.  The cutout shapes can be abstract or geometric or actual objects like houses and trees.
